Oracle Certification Program group lived up to its promise by delivering the Release 12 beta exams as a pre-Christmas gifts. While it is still early to open the seasonal gift wrapping, let us spend some time together in unwrapping this special gift and reading between the lines of the beta exams launch announcement.

The first wave of beta exams are is slated to include five exams of which three has been announced. The foundation exam for R12 E-Business Essentials (1Z0-204) is the equivalent of the current offering of R11i E-Business Essentials (1Z0-200). The exam content is essentially the same but includes R12 topics such as MOAC.

OCP credentials for Financials and Supply Chain has been replaced by Oracle Certified Expert (OCE). Only the Application DBA track would continue to offer OCP certification for R12 version.

For OCE certification, two certification tests from the R11i OCP edition have been combined as one. Hence, OCE exams would be for Inventory and Purchasing, Inventory and Order Management, General Ledger and Payables, General Ledger and Receivables.

While it means just passing one less exam to get certified, one predicts that the jumbo-combo policy will it more difficult to pass the exam. Some of our blog readers are already certified on R11i or are on the verge of completing their certification. As far as certification upgrade path is concerned, one has to take a single exam in their chosen track to obtain OCE certification.

The beta exams are expected to be offered for next three months followed by an eight week post-beta review period. Hence, one expects the production release of the R12 exams to be ready only by mid-2008 or later.

Many of our blog readers would be facing a dilemma whether to proceed with their plans of R11i OCP certification or take the beta exams for R12 OCE certification. The beta exams are being offered at a substantial discount of around 75% but it is a hard labor answering 200 plus questions over three hours or more. Setting aside the budgetary considerations, one needs to carefully judge one's individual need for R12 certification instead of the R11i one. If one is already working on a R12 environment or part of a R12 upgrade project, the certification process would be relevant and feasible. For those working in environments that are on R11i, it would be a challenge to prepare for the R12 exams unless one accesses a publicly available R12 instance to get up to speed with R12 concepts.
